28. What should I look out for when buying a sunbed?
There are many different types, sizes and models available in sunbeds. From practical fold-away canopies to luxurious double sided & stand-ups. Your choice of model will be dependent primarily on the available space, power supply and budget. If comfort is the decisive factor, you will soon arrive at a double sided or stand-up machine. With these models you do not have to turn over and tanning times are halved! Sunbeds also differ because of the type of UV lamps used. Many fold-away machines use HPA or high-pressure lamps, which, after filtering, practically do not emit UVB. This type of lamp provides a tan, but does not cause the skin to thicken as much for optimum protection. The main advantage of this type of equipment is, that their design is usually compact which allows easy move ability from room to room & storage.
Always have cracked glass filters replaced immediately and at solarium centres never lie on or under equipment that shows cracks in the glass filter.
Many machines come with a facial tanner, this is because the facial skin is thicker and therefore tans less easily than the rest of your body. Some people like a tanned face where as others prefer a their natural complection, the choice is yours with any good quality machine. Make sure the facial tanner can be switched on/off separately to the main lamps.
